During Covid-19, our builders are quarantined on our 9th school building site, able to work while staying safe at the same time. The village is supporting them with food, the ultimate in teamwork. School #9 is set to open early 2021. School #8 opened summer 2020. Access to education and safe spaces remains critical during this challenging time.
Stay with us. The youth of Nepal needs us now more than ever.
Why are we doing this?
On April 25, 2015 and then again on May 12, 2015, two devastating earthquakes hit Nepal taking the lives of almost 9,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands without homes.
The April earthquake hit on a Saturday, the only day children in Nepal do not attend school. This was a gift amidst the ruin, for some districts were left with every single school as a pile of rubble.
On May 22, 2015 Kids of Kathmandu, along with partner Asia Friendship Network, was given permission by Ministry of Education, Nepal to rebuild schools in 4 of the most earthquake devastated districts. Temporary schools went up immediately to brace for monsoon season which was drawing near as June approached.
In March 2016, in partnership with SHoP architects, we broke ground on our first 6 permanent schools which were completed at the end of 2017. Kids of Kathmandu leads the charge on project management, design and engineering. We also provide all school desks, white boards, rugs, water purification systems, and libraries full of books.
Kids of Kathmandu and our many partners have done a great deal of work to ensure that the schools we rebuild in rural Nepal are safe and affordable. Our design and engineering work allows us and others groups to maximize our donor’s dollars to provide a 21st century educational experience to prepare the children for their future in this ever evolving Nepal.
The NYCDS orphanage was our first project and how we began in 2010. From 2010-2019, we funded all of the education, food, medical, solar, and water projects for these 45 children that stole our hearts from the beginning. In 2020 we continue with educational support for the children in Classes 10, 11, 12, and 1 transitional year after graduation. We are so proud of the lives the children are creating for themselves.
