During Covid-19, our builders are quarantined on our 9th school building site, able to work while staying safe at the same time. The village is supporting them with food, the ultimate in teamwork. School #9 is set to open early 2021. School #8 opened summer 2020. Access to education and safe spaces remains critical during this challenging time.

Stay with us. The youth of Nepal needs us now more than ever.

Rebuilding Schools

Why are we doing this?

The Devastation

On April 25, 2015 and then again on May 12, 2015, two devastating earthquakes hit Nepal taking the lives of almost 9,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands without homes.

The April earthquake hit on a Saturday, the only day children in Nepal do not attend school. This was a gift amidst the ruin, for some districts were left with every single school as a pile of rubble.

The Rebuilding

On May 22, 2015 Kids of Kathmandu, along with partner Asia Friendship Network, was given permission by Ministry of Education, Nepal to rebuild schools in 4 of the most earthquake devastated districts.

Temporary schools went up immediately to brace for monsoon season which was drawing near as June approached.

In March 2016, in partnership with SHoP architects, we broke ground on our first 6 permanent schools which were completed at the end of 2017.

Kids of Kathmandu leads the charge on project management, design and engineering. We also provide all school desks, white boards, rugs, water purification systems, and libraries full of books.

The Schools

Kids of Kathmandu and our many partners have done a great deal of work to ensure that the schools we rebuild in rural Nepal are safe and affordable. Our design and engineering work allows us and others groups to maximize our donor’s dollars to provide a 21st century educational experience to prepare the children for their future in this ever evolving Nepal.

7.8 Earthquake Epicenter

On April 25, 2015 the most deadly earthquake since 1934 hit Kathmandu and surrounding villages. Close to 9,000 people lost their lives, tens of thousands were injured,  and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. A very large aftershock occurred weeks after on May 12, 2015 and hundreds of aftershocks continue today. Safe schools are a necessity. It’s a simple as that.

How We Began-NYCDS Orphanage, 2010-2019

The NYCDS orphanage was our first project and how we began in 2010. From 2010-2019, we funded all of the education, food, medical, solar, and water projects for these 45 children that stole our hearts from the beginning. In 2020 we continue with educational support for the children in Classes 10, 11, 12, and 1 transitional year after graduation. We are so proud of the lives the children are creating for themselves.

On this International Women’s Day, we look to little girls, to the teenagers in our schools, who grow up to become women. They come to school against so many odds. They stay in school against even more. Education is their path forward. #internationalwomensday #nepal #kidsofkathmandu #educationforgirls

Please say hello to Yuki! Yuki shares our office, Please say hello to Yuki! Yuki shares our office, doing work for both Kids of Kathmandu and Japan based NPO, E-Education. His journey is fascinating. Read below!
——

I was an ordinary boy who was crazy about playing soccer. My journey to achieving world peace has started after knowing a child labor issue related to soccer ball production in South Asia.
During my university life, I studied International Relations mainly focusing on the rights of the child. As an intern, I stayed in Uganda to engage in the project of rehabilitation support for those who were affected by conflicts. Through that experience, I've learned "Each and every one of us has the power to create the future."
Creating a society where this kind of power can be exercised and recognized is a step towards realizing world peace, I believe. I've joined NPO e-Education to challenge the infinite possibilities of education and to make this world a better place for everyone in the world. Now, the next chapter of my journey has just started with Kids of Kathmandu.

“Bhaktapur, a culturally rich city, is where I grew up. I have a Bachelors's degree in Information Management (BIM) and am currently pursuing a Master's of Business Studies (MBS). Growing up, I always wondered how public and private schools differed. This curiosity led me to join Teach for Nepal. In addition to being a math teacher, I was also a leader, changing the lives of some of my students and, more importantly, changing my own. After the fellowship, I became interested in learning more about education systems in public schools, and Kids of Kathmandu provides me the opportunity to do so. People and their stories inspire me. I like dancing, taking rides, listening to music, reading, and sleeping the most. Spreading smiles makes me happy.” #teamkok #kidsofkathmandu #nepal #bethechange

Our vision of constructing genuinely effective and Our vision of constructing genuinely effective and inspiring schools for marginalized communities in remote regions of Nepal has become a reality.

Despite the challenges of 2021, Kids of Katmandu completed our most ambitious school building to date! This amidst Covid-19 disruptions, supply chain shortages, and construction shutdowns.

In 2022, we plan to increase the number of schools we build while setting new standards for rural education in Nepal. Your continued support is what makes our success possible.

Our nine existing schools include a building design that inspires, support systems that cater to the students’ physical and emotional needs, educational technology that expands the possibility of the curriculum for generations, and are built using sustainable construction materials.

With your help, we can continue to build and equip more schools for generations of kids to learn and be inspired to greatness.

With each new school we build, we believe more dee With each new school we build, we believe more deeply in our sustainable design, using rammed earth and earth brick in our buildings. We also continue to partner with organizations that have expertise and experience in this area.

Why do we love our sustainable design?
 1. We build schools in the beautiful natural hills of Nepal. Using material sourced from the site leaves a smaller carbon footprint and lowers transportation costs.
2. The thermal mass keeps it warmer for winter, cooler in summer.
3. It’s beautiful!
